I have been meaning to make a few top 10 lists of online English teaching companies for a long time now. There are so many of them and it is hard to find the good ones. So here we are, I am starting with best European companies in no particular order. One advantage of working for a European company is that they treat their employees well compared to other countries that have fewer regulations and policies related to workers. This has been my experience working for European companies at least. They communicated well with teachers and offered a fair payment system. A reminder that most of these companies are not huge corporations but medium sized businesses, so for that reason they are not always hiring and you may have to check their website frequently to see if they are hiring. Most of them focus on teaching professional adults as well, so this means you will need to learn some business English.
If you disagree with this top 10 list, leave a comment below saying why.
- Woospeak is a long running English teaching company with more than 150 teachers. They have a solid reputation and they are based in Paris. It helps your job prospects with them if you are fluent in French. They pay around €18 per hour.
- Learnlight is based in Barcelona and might be the largest company on this list with over 3000 trainers. They claim to be an EdTech company offering language services. They specialize in English, but they offer other language courses as well. They have an impressive platform with clear communication channels. They pay €10 per hour for individual classes and €12 for group classes.
- Speexx is based in Munich, Germany. They specialize in teaching business English to adults but they also teach Spanish, German, French and Italian. This company truly offers teachers the opportunity to grow and their unique platform is very useful. The pay starts at €6 per 1 to 1 virtual class (25 minutes) with paid and fair cancellation policies plus paid training.
- 1to1Progress is based in Rouen, France. They are a small (100 teachers) but great company to work for. Professional management gives the company great atmosphere. They hire native speaking teachers with a TESL/CELTA and 1 year of experience in distance language training for adults, experience in the business world and mastery of professional vocabulary. It is not necessary to be bilingual but if you are bilingual in with French, Italian or Spanish it will be a plus for beginner level learners. The pay started at €15 per hour but you can get raises to around €17 or €18 per hour.
- Learnship is another German company based in Cologne. They also have offices in Chicago, Tokyo, Shanhgai and Mexico City. They are a large company that teaches many languages with over 1000 teachers. However, they seem to be going through some growing pains as their reputation has declined in the past 4 or 5 years. Teachers have been asked to take pay cuts and if a student doesn’t show up for a class the teacher only gets paid 33% of their regular wage. Seems unfair, hopefully Learnship can improve the reputation. The pay ranges from €12 to €17 per hour.
- Babbel is one of the largest language learning apps in the world and now they are offering language classes as well. They started in Berlin, Germany and have since expanded to New York. Classes are taught with iOS or Android. They teach many languages including English, Spanish, French and German. They pay a minimum of $12USD per hour and a maximum of $35 with bonuses.
- Myngle is based in the Netherlands and is one of the oldest online English teaching companies. Back in the 2000s teachers could earn big money with Myngle. They have changed a lot over the years and do not offer the same wages that they used to but they still offer fair wages and treat their workers well. Most students are European and Japanese. They mainly teach business English, but they do teach other languages as well. They pay €15 for 1to1 and €20€ for group classes and each class is 45 minutes long.
- Fluentify has offices in London, Turin and Milan. They specialize in teaching business English. They want teachers with a TEFL certificate, two years of teaching experience and online teaching experience. They provide some materials, but you can also use your own teaching materials. They teach Spanish, French and Italian as well. They pay up to €11 per 30 minute class.
- Lingoda is no longer a create–a–profile language teaching company. They must have changed recently. They are based in Berlin, Germany and offer group and 1 to 1 classes. Native speakers can teach English, French, German or Spanish. Lingoda has over 1500 teachers and 2 million monthly visitors to their website. However the pay is lower than other European companies €8 to €12 per hour.
- Enlego is a brand new company based in Talinn, Estonia. I thought I would include it here at number 10 to get some more eyes on it and some feedback. Their students are European and teachers must be native speakers with one year of teaching experience. However we don’t know much else about this company yet, so a review or comment here would be great.
