Ringle

Ringle Review

Ringle is a South Korean company that has over 1000 teachers. They want native English speakers who have a university degree from a top school in the US or UK. No Canadians apparently. Classes are either 40 minute discussion or 55 minute interviews. There is also some editing and proofreading tasks. There are no minimum or maximum working hours, they provide the lesson material and they pay once a week or once a month with Paypal. It looks like wages start at $17 USD per hour but can increase up to $22. Please leave a comment or a review of Ringle.

I love working here. They seemed to have inceased the pay. The only issue I have and it is a common one in this area, the balance of students to teacher. Right now, they either overhired or had a large decrease in students. Since I have another side job with the same student base on Korea, It is probably mostly over hired. I dropped tp less than half my normal load and that is no longer enough to pay the bills. It seems per the FB page it is causing issues for the rest f the teachers too and that this does not happen on a regular basis

The staff is beyond rude and abusive. They do not work with the tutors and will let you go with little to no notice. They also threatened me that if I write a bad review they’d take legal action. Do not work for them

Uhm, if you’re too old, they will reject you. Yup. Stay away. They seem shallow, immature and unprofessional.

It seems as if they only accept Ivy League Applicants. I have a degree in TESOL, a certificate, and teaching experience in the US and Korea. They took over a week to respond to my application and ultimately rejected me. I was left confused and decided to ask then the reason why I was rejected. This was their response:

“Given your highly qualified teaching experience in many different fields, we’re deeply regretful that we could not move forward with you at this time. We would like to mention that many of the students on our platform are looking for tutors who not only help with their linguistic development, but also discuss professional knowledge from their field of study, offer career advice in specific industries and share cultural perspectives. This is why Ringle tutors, unlike those on other platforms, are not necessarily required to have TEFL or TESOL qualifications. Thank you for your understanding.”

Thought that this response was ridiculous. Unless you went to an Ivy League or have what apparently I don’t have (haha), don’t waste your time and sanity on Ringle.

Here’s the current start landing page for job applicants:

    https://www.ringleplus.com/en/tutor/landing/home

    From their FAQ:

Ringle tutors start out earning $15 per 40-minute lesson and $9 per 20-minute lesson, but can progress to earning over $20 per 40-minute lesson and $13 per 20-minute lesson through our Promotion system and weekly bonuses. This means a Ringle tutor earns between $15 – $20 per hour on average.

I used to work at Ringle from January 2020-May 2020, working here gave me a lot of stress. It was much more work than what they were paying. Most people I worked with wanted me to do very extensive proof reading and editing that was worth much more than $15 for a 45 min session. It was exhausting, and draining, because I would do all of this work for them till they were satisfied. Then when it came time for feedback, the students would write a lot of harsh comments, which diminished the fact that I did all of this editing for them. Then their staff would chastize me from what the students wrote, and I would explain that during the lesson, I ask multiple times if they have quesitons or further explaining. Usually the students would say no, then behind your back complain to the staff. I think this system is very abusive. Unless you like being used by your students, and badmouthed behind your back in Korean this maybe not be the job for you.

Rejected a native English teacher from England with over 5 years experience… For a 12usd an hour job. What a joke of a company. Their big loss.

I take full accountability for my circumstances. Nurturing a child with special needs demands dedication on my part.

As my peer, you’ve expressed your distain for your categorization of my unprofessionalism.

I express the same for Ringle staff. I’ve never worked for, or have been aware of, a corporation that does not formally terminate an employee.

There was no email, zoom meeting or any other form of outreach.

I only found out by happenstance two months later after I kept inquiring about a lack of lessons. An IT technician, I’ve conversed with before, informed me that the lack of lessons were due to COVID.

The same IT technician solicited me for lessons on Ringle during my inquiry and wanted to send me some of her writing. She had already vetted

I did not find this professional.

In response, Ringle staff said it was a miscommunication.

    Warmest Regards,
    Rahny

Thank you for taking the time to leave a detailed account of your experiences with this company. You have given me significant insight into the internal workings of this company. You are gracious and kind and I wish there were more people like you in the world. Your love for your child is so inspiring. Please let me know of any company that you would recommend for me to teach through, as I trust your judgement.

Update on Ringle: I no longer work here. They are still a great company, but please keep the following in mind to increase your chance of success.

    1. Lack of Communication from Staff: Sadly I’ve found this to be a constant with many companies from China, Taiwan, and Korea.

I had tried for 2 months to address that I received no lessons. Unbeknownst to me, I was let go from the company. I just found out today. I reached out several times about the lack of lessons. This was the response I got.

“Due to COVID-19 and lack of students to teacher ratio, there are few lessons available.”

    2. No Children/ Student Environment: The students are not fond of children whatsoever. It seems the few appearances my son made were reported to staff multiple times. Again, I was not able to see any of these specific comments nor did staff relay this to me on a continual basis.

-Single Parents/Parents: Make sure you have some type of childcare or at least be sure your child will never be heard or seen on camera.

    3. Student Comments: It seems you are not able to see them all, as I was informed otherwise by staff based on their reasonings for letting me go.

    4. Chat Bots/ Staff Email: Although they state they will get back to you within a certain time frame, this may take up to a week at times. Many times, my inquiries were ignored.

    5. Cancellation Rate/ Ratings: If you cancel more than a certain set of lessons in a month, your account in on freeze. You need to ask the amount because it is not stated anywhere.

    – If you do exceed the amount or receive a few low ratings, your overall rating will be tanked for the remainder of your time. Students base their selection on these ratings.

Ex: You’ve received 6/7 ratings for over half the month, your one bad month or week prior take all precedence on your rating.

    6. Student Reviews: It seems many students are not truthful about their satisfaction with your lesson performance. I make it point to check multiple times throughout, but despite this, the students later relayed to staff about their true feelings.

    — It may be best, if you get a negative comment, rating or feel a bit off about the lesson, reach out to staff. You’ll have to be diligent, as they tend to give you the runaround or take more than 3 days to a week to get back to you. Then, you’ll have to pull for more details.

    7. Internal Reviews: They claimed many times to review footage of lessons I had grievances with, but sadly, the staff did not give any feedback.

    8. Constructive Criticism: It is very lacking. There were a few occasions, but this was only because I initiated it. Again, just be diligent and follow up and take the lead.

I wish you all the best, and hope this feedback helps you to be a great tutor.

    Best,
    Rahny

I would fire anyone who had other people, children. whatever, entering the class during working hours!! You deserved to lose your job!

Having a son with special needs and his developmental delays can be incredibly challenging. Sadly, it saddens me my peers find a high moral guide to chastize my family for this.

I persevere and am forward with positivity as I procure resources to support his disabilities especially during this COVI epidemic.

Best of luck to you both and hope success finds you so you can continue to support your families. 🙂

Andrew you are a despicable human being. Rahny was gracious enough to leave a detailed roadmap of how to ensure a successful relationship with this company and this is how you repay him? Your parents must be really proud of you. Life has a way of teaching people like you lessons. Brace yourself – you’re in for a bumpy ride.

        • Todd Andrew Pruden

It is a very sad situation for Rahny, I admit. Let me ask you one question, however… If you owned a company and hired someone to do a specific job, you would have no problem with them bringing a child to the workplace (unannounced and every day?)

Wow! You are a moral giant! (Of course yor business would go under quicky.) It is strange how do-gooders find out about the real world in the hardest ways!

    • Lynne S

Please forgive me. I did not realize that this was the company that required that its tutors have a degree from an Ivy League school. I knew there were companies that had this stipulation but, I did not know this was the name of it.

I am glad I found this out before applying and then, being laughed at on my way out the door. Best of luck to you all. I am still happy that I found other companies on this website. I really do not care for the Facebook atmosphere.

      • Rahny Day

They do not require an Ivy League degree. They may say that in some of their advertisements. I remember reading that in their description as well when I applied last December. I have a BA from Kansas State University.

*** Now, maybe they’ve changed since my time there.***

In my interview there was no mention of an Ivy League degree or anything of that manner. I do hope this helps, and take a chance and apply. 🙂

As an educator myself, you can have a big-name degree from a fancy university, but at the same time, you’re learning all the same skill sets. It matters how you can synthesize your skills and apply it to the real world.

I snagged a job as an adjunct instructor at a local college with only a BA. You don’t need to catch up to the world. It needs to catch up to you.

Best of luck to you! 😊

*** HIRING!!!!! They have a shortage of tutors for students. So they are definitely looking to hire. Due to this, it may be a few weeks before you get lessons. ***

*** New Tutors: They offer you lessons to choose from for the first week as you don’t have a rating.*** —> *** Given this, it may take a few weeks to get lessons.***

    *** Why I Love Working Here ***

    – I thrive with teaching adults. The average age is 23 +.

    – The content is very engaging with creative lesson topics.

——— (((( Disney Inner workings, Elon Musk, Sustainability, Parasite ( Korean Film), Marriage Traditions, Crossfit, Ben & Jerry’s, Revolutionizing Media, Amazon, etc.. I could go on forever! 🙂

    – I always learn something new about Korean culture and gain a new perspective from those who have lived in the states or truly want to advance in their profession by improving their English.

No company is one size fits all, but if you’re looking for an incredibly flexible schedule, supplementing your income, gain cultural insight, work exclusively with adults, and teach creative topics then this is the place for you. I wish you all the best in your search.

    Best,
    Rahny

    **My Experience:

** My mother died the night of my training. They allowed me to reschedule at my leisure.**

Sad to see mixed reviews. I was hired in December of 2019. It was incredibly professional and positive. I can understand these things can happen and not everyone upholds professionalism. I”ve had some pretty unsavory interviews myself that left me saying, ” WTF……” 🙂 .**

    1. Interview Prep:

They have a plethora of videos taken from lessons and or mock lessons that simulate the teaching environment very well.

    – Tutor Video: They outline tips from current tutors and tips for doing well in the interview.

    – You choose the lesson you want to teach and get ample time to prepare. ( Based on your selected interview time. )

    ————————–
    My Interview:
    ————————

    Zoom & Google Docs Integration

Very professional. He even gave me feedback in real-time and allowed me to make the proper adjustments.

He pretended to be a student. ( Made believable grammatical errors and so forth.)

We went over the lesson based on the questions he selected and worked through the material.

Google Docs is embedded in the platform so you take notes in real-time. The can as well if they choose to.

Filled out evaluation just as you would with any other regular student. The criteria is all provided for you.

    ————————
    Pay & Schedules
    —————————
    – $15.00- $20 ——-> You start off at $15.00 and move up the more hours you work.

    – Weekly Pay: Paypal, Give 3 days after pay period for transaction to occur. They pay 50% of the PayPal fee.

    – No Show: You still get paid for no-shows as long as you stay for 25 mins. I**** I know! Sweet, right? 🙂 ****

    ** Cancellation Policy:

    – Student Cancel: If they cancel within a certain time frame, you get paid your rate.

_ Tutor Cancel: If within 24/7, there is no penalty
The closer it gets to 24 hours your pay is docked. It ranges from 10% to 100% of your pay ( Note: This affects your tutor rating that students see.)

    _**Choosing Schedule:

No minimum or maximum hours. 5 am- 12:30 pm, 3 pm- 11:30 pm ( Lately they’ve been adjusting and extending times for more slots. )

    – 20 min slots ( new) : 60% of pay

    – 40 min slots ( Regular pay $15-20)

    – Recurring Schedule: You can set it so your schedule is recurring for however many weeks you want. You are not bound to this and can change it at any point. It just makes it easier if you like to have the same availability

    – Maximum Lessons: You can set the maximum amount of lessons you allow students to book. So it will the system will stop accepting lessons based on the number you set.

    —————————-
    Lesson Selection:
    ——————————

Students choose their tutor as you will create a tutor page. ( Bio, Video etc..)

** They see your Cancellation Rate, Acceptance Rate, Bio & Schedule** This influences their decision on which tutors to choose.

    – When booked, it will give you the time, type of lesson and student name ( if applicable)

-Unassigned lessons: First come first serve. There are lessons that have been canceled by another tutor or students that have not been assigned yet. I get the bulk of my lessons from this pool. As your rating increases, students will choose you more.

    —————————–
    Lesson Content/ Library
    ——————————-

    – Correction Focused ( Grammar, Speaking, Writing, etc.. ), Speaking Focused –> All of this is specified in the lesson description

. A creative mix of lessons from Disney Inner workings, Elon Musk, Sustainability, Parasite ( Korean Film), Marriage Traditions, Crossfit, Ben & Jerry’s, Revolutionizing Media, Amazon, etc.. I could go on forever! 🙂

    – You grade students on criteria. ( Grammar, Pronunciation, Fluency, Vocabulary, etc..)

    – Provide Written Feedback

    – Diverse student base: Marketing, Master’s, Ph. D, Students, etc.

    – I’ve gotten a lot of students from major corporations as well as those wanting interview prep for jobs and college admissions.

    Browsing Lesson:

    – They have the full database available to tutors if you want to look at them whenever you want. You have access to the videos, summaries, and questions that accompany them all.

Again, best of luck to you all in your search. I understand the grind. 🙂 I hope you are all safe and healthy during these trying times.

Does the information above all pertain to the company, Ringle Plus? I am learning about new companies on this site and not just the popular ones on FB. Are there designated times for the young students to take lessons? Or is the an adult only platform? Just the creative mix of lessons seems to be quite a bit more appealing. I know those are for the adults. I assume these adults already know English but, they need more practice, is that correct? Please forgive me for barging into a conversation. I am just excited to see more companies that are available.

      • Rahny

Hey, this is what this forum is for it to get information!! 😊.

This is an adults only company. Most of the adults work for international companies and or are looking to apply to graduate school. Some have their masters and PhD. There are also a handful of students that have lived in the United States for the majority of their life and just want to refine their skills a bit more.

You may help with interview prep, vocabulary for the workplace, Jon related ( answering conference calls) or helping them proofread their resume or higher education submission essays.

For many of these things like, helping with conference calls in that fourth, you have to do your own prep for that. I looked up various sites to create Scripps and role-plays for them to help facilitate a real world scenario.

In my experience most of them have been at an intermediate level. Most of them were at a very early high intermediate level and some advanced.

I do hope this helps you get an idea of what to expect. If you have any more questions, please feel free to post and reach out. I wish you the absolute best! 😊

    • Samuel

Wait, — they have a shortage of tutors for students but it ‘may take a few weeks to get classes’ – sounds like ‘bs’ to me.

    • Stephan Langdon

Interview process weak. Korean woman who was playing with her child while the interview was going on. Didn’t want to discuss conditions of job – pay, hours, ect. System confusing. Wasn’t interested in working there too much. Did the interview to practice but would not recommend.

  • Elsie

Very unprofessional, booked an interview with me and cancelled it few hours later. Telling me that they have decided not to move on with me. Why did they have to book an interview in the first place if they knew I wasn’t qualified?. I am beginning to feel there is more to this.

  • Lori

I have over 9 years of teaching experience, a BA, and I am TESOL certified, but for some reason, they rejected my application. I am guessing it is because of my age, as the Asian schools are notorious for rejecting teachers over 35.

    • Dugen

Well, I’m 44 and got an interview FYI (Northwestern University – Bachelor’s).

I will just say that you do need to be able to type FAST. The interview basically consisted of transcribing the “student’s” responses onto the screen, and then going back and offering suggestions/corrections/alternatives/etc. The evaluator said, “Wow, you’re an excellent teacher and really did very well.” She then went through with specific things that she liked. She ended with something along the lines of “…but you don’t type fast enough, I’m so sorry”. To be honest, I type well but definitely could not keep up, even though she tried to speak more slowly. Good luck all!
