Magic Ears

Magic Ears Review

Magic Ears is in Beijing and they teach children aged 5-12. Their classes can have up to 4 students. They want native speakers from Canada or the USA with an ESL certificate or teaching experience (although these last two qualifications are not always required). Teaching material is provided by the company and the hours are weekdays: 6:30pm-9pm, weekends and holidays: 10am-11:30am & 6:30pm-9pm (Beijing Time). Booking rate depends on how good the teacher is or if the student likes the teacher. Magic Ears pays a base rate $7.50 per 30 minute class ($15 per hour plus bonuses) to teachers who meet their basic requirements. Teachers who have taught over 1000 hours online OR have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in English or English language training earn $8.50 per 30 minute class ($17 per hour plus bonuses). Lastly teachers who have taught over 1000 hours online AND have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in English or English language training earn $10 per 30 minute class ($20 per hour plus bonuses).  Their bonuses include incentives of $1 for being on time and for having 60 time slots open per month.

Please leave us your comments and reviews of Magic Ears.

Horrible horrible thieving company. I taught 10
Classes with them and because of THEIR mistakes, they started to dock my salary and now my account is in debt. All that hard-work for nothing. I hope they go under, as they don’t deserve to continue.

They play constant mind games with you, and Communication is non-existent. Their micro management BS is beyond a joke. Eww, god I hate them!!!

    AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

I just interviewed with Magic Ears and it was really a joke. Both the teaching and the process and policies.

On the teaching side, for prep I watched a full video of a young kids class of 4 students. The teacher was literally preventing the kids from saying anything more than about 8 words. Ask the kid how they are today, ‘Happy’, and do not ask why, that’s not part of the program and just opens a can of worms, then all the kids will want to talk! The teacher was even cutting off the kids at times.

I suppose ME figures they can tell the parents, your kid is going to learn 5 words today. From my perspective, they are only going to learn 5 words. I did watch a bit of a class at a higher level, with two kids, and that seemed more normal.

Among their policies: Every student must get between 6-8 trophies per class. 6-8. The parents might get unhappy with the teacher if the kid doesn’t have 6. Just shows how they implement dumb features and then require their use. The kids don’t even react to the trophies.

On the interviewing process, it was just as bad. I do not have a TEFL, they ask within their application system, but they still schedule the interview. I even wrote to them I was working on one, I told them clearly that I was a month away from getting it (which, you all know what that means, its really 2 months at best lol). But, schedule the interview because why not.

The interviewer was nice but he didn’t know anything about me, he didn’t even know if I had done a live demo class or a recorded one. It was pretty clear that he had done zero prep work for the interview. And don’t get me started on their policy of preferring that you record your screen while pretending a kid is there for the demo class. If you feel dumb acting like a dancing monkey with the kids, just try it without the kids.

So the interview class goes ok, not great, but he was ready to run me in there at least. As it says in some of the comments, they offered 15 bucks an hour, far far away from their claimed 26 bucks. Is that including the basic bonus for showing up? He didn’t mention it…actually I think the way it worked was the 15 bucks included that. Anyway he didn’t say much about bonuses.

As far as I understood what the interviewer told me, to get more money you have to have a TEFL or equivalent, AND you have to have some massive number of documented hours of teaching online. Like, what he seemed to be saying was, take a screenshot of your gogokid (or another company) profile page with the proof of the class hours. Pretty easy to fake, how are they going to verify that? Makes me think they will deny whatever evidence you provide, but who knows. And what if your experience isn’t documented on a webpage like that? Who knows maybe they will take any kind of proof.

Anyway that’s my experience, it was not very good.

When I Googled Magic Ears the review/description said that the company does NOT hire people of color. I am a Black woman and would never even want to work for a company with this disgusting policy or waste my time applying. Would someone honestly tell me if this is true, please? Also, if you believe it is not true, please tell me how you know that for certain. Do you actually know a person of color who teaches for Magic Ears. I really like what I’ve read about the company, except this, and would like to apply. Currently, I work for another company and am not getting enough bookings. THANK YOU very, very much.

    • Sasha

      Hey Melody,

I’m a black woman who has worked for this company for four months. So, yes they hire people of color. They require English to be your first language, a BA, a TESOL, and experience working with kids.

      • Mike

They hire and fire people of color. If you get the wrong coach, you will be terminated without cause. Myself and another person were recruited by a mentor. We passed the interview, got hired, started teaching. I was asked to have a computer with a faster processor, so I purchased a newer model and began teaching. First, my friend was fired for “not enough passion”. I have known her for years and she is a passionate excellent teacher, Then 2 weeks later, they said that I received a parent complaint, although all of the students in the class gave me 5 stars. I couldn’t believe it when I saw a termination in my email. No communication, no feedback, just an alleged parent complaint and termination. Please do NOT put all of your eggs in one basket with this company. They use the vague bottomlines as an excuse to terminate for no reason. All they have to say is “not enough passion”. I wouldn’t waste my time. They are very disciminative.

Hello thank you for all the valuable information. Are you still employed by Magic Ears? I am interested on applying … Have a bless day!

  • jerelea

Hi there, is it true that to work for magic ears you now need a bachelors and a TEFSL cert? I am only a few credits away from completing my bachelors, plus I have one year of art school, so in total 5 years post secondary education…is there any change I can get hired or will I have to complete those last few credits? thanks

  • Cathy

This company is full of luff. They do not hold their end of the bargan. I have well over 10 years teaching experience and never got paid what they said. Always an excuse and not paid on time. I have no time to waste on ridiculous wannabe pro companies.
Also, be careful for those who have referral links, they may not be honest since they get paid an incentive for teachers who sign up.

I am an American living in the Philippines. While I have just earned a TEFL certificate, I have only an Associates degree and no English teaching experience. I would like to work online, but really need to earn $15-$20 per hour. I’ve applied to several of the Chinese companies listed above, but I either get nor response, or the decline me due to lack of experience. For example, Boxfish is now much more selective than indicated above.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for me? Oh, and it doesn’t have to be a Chinese company.

    • Amber Talbert

They won’t even accept you with an associates. My application was automatically rejected because I don’t have a BA.

Hello, I’ve been working at Magic Ears for over 8 months now and wanted to let you know that they have just recently added 40% more students and are desperate for teachers. It is true that you won’t start at 26$US, generally you will start at 18$US an hour, but if you get there on time for your classes you get 1$ more a class, so it’s 20$US an hour. Then they have bonuses if you give them a certain amount of slots during their busy booking times. There’s also bonuses for referrals and other extra things you can participate in that can add to your earnings.

What’s nice with this company is that you are not stuck in a fixed schedule, you give your availability a few weeks beforehand and there’s no minumum hours that you have to give them. So it’s a good company to join if you already work for another school or if your schedule is not always stable.

It’s also a fun platform to use, very interactive and the students can help one another because they are seeing the others answering. So if you have a really good student, they help carry along the class by their example. You have a class clown and they make the students laugh so you don’t have to do all the entertaining…

The company is still relatively new and is always adjusting. They welcome our feedback and encourage it. They also are constantly applying our suggestions and trying to be the best company they can. The staff in China are super nice and considerate and make it easier to work with if problems arise.

I hope this information was useful, you can use my reference link bellow if you would like to apply:

I am about to apply with Magic Ears and am wondering if they have a minimum amount of hours per week that you need to work.

  • Zoey

I had my doubts when applying, as anyone would with an online teaching company in China. But everyone I met along the hiring process was great and very helpful. I’ve been working there for over 4 months now and I love the MagicEars. Yes, there are some technical issues that can be frustrating by the management is very fair about dealing with them and helping you. They are extremely supportive of their teachers and provide some truly wonderful students. The application makes teaching English fun and it’s been a way better experience teaching English here than I’ve had in in-person classrooms previously

  • Brenda

I am interested in doing MagicEars for a part-time job. I currently teach full time as it is, but in a year round school. This means I have a few weeks here and there with nothing to do. 🙂 Is it feasible to think I could do this without being stressed out from the “real” job of teaching 4th grade (lesson plans, grading papers, teacher meetings, etc…. ) and still balance the life of a mom having to cook and clean? If I only worked weekends or one hour a few nights a week, could I expect to keep busy?

    Thanks!

  • Nadine

HI Calico Jack, just wondering if you you are still working with Magic Ears. I would like to ask a few more questions about this company, their expected hours as of now, and what the hiring process entails. I have seen the problems with VIPKID as well and am not eager to hitch my wagon to them, so to speak. If you have an email address, or FB account, I’d appreciate some more communication.

  • Ann Blythe Benson

    Hello 🙂
How much time in general does it take to prepare to teach Magic Ears classes in general? With such a large age range, it seems like there would be a lot of prep time for the different developmental stages of the children. How many “lessons” are there in the curriculum?
    Thank you!
    ANN

    • Melanie Huddleston

Because every lesson is so different. You must prep at first. Most teachers take notes on all classes because you must reach the Let’s play slide by 18-20 minutes. However, this slide could be anywhere on any lesson. It’s impossible to just take the number of slides and use that to gauge how long to spend on each slide the way it’s all laid out. If they are watching you and you make any small mistakes you will be spoken too about it depending on whether you are a favorite worker or not.

  • Calico Jack

It’s May 2018. VIPKID is now saturated with teachers. VIPKID had nearly 20,000 when I started in June 2017. Now it has 40,000 teachers.

At its prime in 2017, VIPKID was the most popular online English teaching jobs most people were aware of.

By the end of 2019, VIPKID forecasts it will have 300,000 teachers. So much for job security.

But if you’re serious about teaching English online, and making money doing it, then keep reading. This gets better.

It all boils down to this…

Ever notice all the videos on Youtube, “How to get bookings at VIPKID?” and that sort of stuff. Seems odd that everyone is scrambling to get hired at a company and then SURPRISE!!! There’s no work for you once you’re in.

Once you’re hired as a VIPKID Teacher, you still have all your work ahead of you. Now you’ve got to market yourself to parents, promote yourself to students, cultivate your crop of followers, and run yourself on empty just to make that promised income at a company that hired you months ago.

I’ve got GOOD NEWS, so stick with me here…

Getting bookings is and has been an issue at VIPKID since early 2017 (the proof is in the upload date of those Youtube videos).

    Here’s the kicker…

Now that VIPKID has double the number of teachers, and VIPKID’s keen, bloodthirsty termination of existing teachers, the lack of bookings problem is even more pervasive.

But wait… why are so many people dashing in to get hired at VIPKID?

It sounds simple. But it isn’t.

The fact of the matter is that VIPKID is the only company people are exposed to, because of its aggressively promiscuous marketing campaign. You may not even remember where you first heard of VIPKID. It could’ve been in your Facebook feed, it could’ve been on any social platform, in Adwords, or even told to you by a well-meaning (but profit-motivated) friend.

    So what’s the good news?

The answer might surprise you. There are dozens and dozens of companies just like VIPKID that you simply aren’t yet aware of. Some pay worse, some pay better. If you choose the first one you were exposed to, if you go with VIPKID, then you’re robbing yourself.

Some even offer fewer hours, but you end up working more and making more money since at VIPKID you are likely to sit on your hands for months before even teaching a class. The choice is yours.

The good news is that this doesn’t have to be you.

I looked at many of them. I found more than 50. I applied to several, was hired by them, and now I work for Magic Ears which pays more than VIPKID, has no cancellation policy–you can cancel when you’re sick or whenever you need to without penalty (VIPKID terminates you if you cancel 6 classes), and has a much better teaching platform, and you can use all the “incidental language” you want, and you GET BOOKED at Magic Ears rather than waiting months before you start building up your student base.

    But I’m jumping ahead.

Though very stressful and impersonal, VIPKID is not the worst company to work for. There are plenty of good things about it: there’s no shortage of Youtube videos and blog posts talking about it (created by VIPKID “teachers” who make more from recruiting than from teaching).

    Still, there’s a catch…

If you decide to work at VIPKID, good luck getting any work (after all the hours you pour into acing the interview, the demo, the mock classes…you still have all the work ahead of you once you’re hired–you’ll have to compete with 40,000 other teachers–which is projected to rise to 300,000 VIPKID teachers by 2019.

    Sound familiar?

If you DO use a referral code (you don’t need to use mine posted below, you can use any referral code, your application will get priority viewing and you’ll get preference for trial classes if you want them.

    No marketing there, it’s true.

We used to have way fewer candidates and then it wasn’t important if you have a code/link, or you just bumped into us.

More people now applying, so this is easier and important for us to know who came with a referral. Usually it’s our friends, teachers with experience, colleagues we know are good (or people who bothered to read this far), so OF COURSE we’d give them priority.

People like me help the company find people like YOU, so the company gives priority for you.

It’s pretty obvious once you think about it.

Delay can be caused by many things, platform bugs and issues, just stuff we deal with and that’s why we can be a bit slow occasionally, but applicants with referral links will be on the top of the list.

Using a referral link is not just for the interview, but you (the applicant) will also have priority for scheduling trial classes as well as everything else during the application process.

    https://t.mmears.com?referralCode=T136063

Whichever company you decide to apply to, feel free to pick my brain about anything. I have a lot of experience here and I know things about companies that other people don’t know. I’m here to help.

By “better teaching platform,” here are some specific ways Magic Ears is better:

You can move the image of your student around the screen. This is useful in many ways you wouldn’t expect. For example, you can play hopscotch or a maze or a race to the finish square–and your student can watch himself/herself move along the screen!

You can double click the little box in which you appear, and you now grow double in size. Same with your student. This just adds one way your class is exciting. You can do this briefly (for a couple seconds) to get the student’s attention.

You can easily customize your drawing tool–making it bolder and smoother. You can change its color. Want to draw blue instead of red? Easy. Want to write in yellow or pink? Done. I can make my pen (teacher’s pen) blue and the student’s pen red or pink or their favorite color.

In VIPKID’s PPT slides, nothing “happens.” They are static. In this new company, many of them (maybe 20% of the slides?) have some dynamic thing in them that moves around and sings when you click it. Something like that.

If a student goes crazy and starts scribbling all over the screen, you can de-authorize the student from drawing with a single click. You cannot do this in VIPKID (though there is an option to do this when you right-click your PPT slide in VIPKID and then a drop-down appears with 4 options written in Chinese (for you the teacher), and one option does say something like “disable student’s drawing tool,” it has never worked when I tried it…and I tried it at least ten times on ten different students).

I could list another 10 little neat things about this new teaching platform (can you tell I’m in love with it?).

By “offers significantly higher pay than VIPKID,” I do not mean triple the amount, or even double the amount. I just mean $3 more per hour (which is significant, in my opinion). If you work just 20 hrs/wk, that’s an extra $320/mo. extra free money. Come to think of it, even $2/hr more would be a 10% increase.

Remember, that’s just extra money on top.

    And what’s even better??

I enjoy it. It doesn’t stress me out like VIPKID.

Despite VIPKID losing $184,000,000 in 2017, and 2018 losses projected at $316,230,000…VIPKID used to be a good company, but it was the first company I had been exposed to (because VIPKID has an aggressive advertising campaign and an even more aggressive recruitment/referral system in place).

VIPKID gained popularity not because it’s the best option for teachers, but because VIPKID has the most promiscuous business model.

I would be interested to apply to magic ears via your code – I notice that you mention it’s ‘easier’ to take time off – I want to work and I want to work a lot – but I want a week off at Christmas time, and a week or two in the summer – this has been my major issue… can you send me an email if you think magic ears can give me a few weeks off a year.

  • Crystal

I began my time with Magic Ears back in February. I am really amazed by how different this company is. They genuinely care about their teachers. I also appreciate the opportunities for secondary positions, even for new teachers. The bookings start off slowly in order to help new to Magic Ears teachers, ease into teaching multiple students online. I’ve worked with other ESL companies that have 1 on 1 platforms and teaching more than 1 student at a time does present a unique set of challenges. I’m enjoying the gradual transition into an increase in hours and it works well for, as I plan to leave the other company I currently work for in a couple of weeks, in order to work exclusively for Magic Ears as I like this company a lot more.

    • mikedveenstra@gmail.com

Good question! I don’t think so as Magic Ears teaches mostly groups and VIPKid is one to one. Magic Ears also uses different materials so I don’t think they are the same.

  • Rashedia

Hi everyone .I’m interested in Magic ears too, however , If i recall correctly , they don’t hire persons of African descent . I would like to know so i don’t waste time . Thank you

    • Crystal

Hi Rashedia, this is simply not true. Magic Ears does have a diverse group of teachers that is reflective of how diverse North America, and the US in particular really is. If you’re a good teacher and meet their bottom lines/list of qualifications, you will get hired.

    • Robert Schiffman

“At present, we’re giving the advantage to teachers with North American accents as our clients are demanding that their children learn not only English but also natural NA English accents from American/Canadian teachers.” They are NOT interested in any other accent except that GRATING AMERICAN TWANG!!

    • Keri

Yes, sure! I do, and plan to continue! As long as you have not signed a non – compete clause, as an independent contractor you are free to do as you please. Let me know if you have any more questions! Teacherkeri123@gmail.com

Magic Ears is an excellent place to look for a fun and fulfilling way to bring in a little extra cash-flow. Obviously, the teaching hours aren’t enough (yet– they are growing!) to bring in a full-time income, but it is good pay. I firmly believe this company wants the best for their teachers and that a promising future lies ahead for them. If you are having a hard time getting bookings with other companies (like me), you might take the leap (or hop) to join the Magic Ears family in addition to your current online ESL company. Now is the time to hop on board! Here is a link to my youtube channel to help you with your application process: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCrZ1GgJ6kML-EWR6YLWDfw?view_as=public

    • Natalia Hughes

For Carol and any others that are interested. I have been working for Magic Ears for a couple of months and I really enjoy it! Not only is the pay great, considerably more than other companies, but the support team is very reasonable and excellent to work with. Teaching hours are from 6:30-9am and some evening weekend hours, so it’s a little each day. For those that need to work more, you can volunteer for standby which pays well and if you end up teaching then you receive your regular compensation.

For those who would like to apply they are currently hiring native speakers with some teaching experience, no degree required, although a TESOL Certificate is preferred.

      • Garrett Cochran

        Hey Natalia,

Magic Ears looks great! Thanks for the information. I’m wondering, how are they with time off. I see online that I need to tell them a month in advance. But is there a limited amount of total weeks/days that I can take off within a 6 month contract? Thanks!

  • Nadzster

They don’t pay that much ! I am a well qualified teacher of over 16years experience and wanted to start me at 9$ per hour base pay with maybe some incentives. To me, that was just plain insulting. I never was offered so low in my whole career !

  • Nina

I have been working for MagicEars for four months and so far I’m really happy. The pay is great, the flexibility of working from home is great, and the students are so cute. Most of the students really are motivated to learn. The curriculum MagicEars has designed is very high quality, and not having to prep lesson plans or grade papers is absolutely awesome. The staff are very kind and usually very responsive. They provide lots of trainings to be sure you are prepared. It makes for a really flexible schedule and lets me have other part time jobs and pursue other interests. I hope I get to continue working for them for a while, because it’s a great company.

Booking rate_the better you’re, the more classes you will get.
The students/parents don’t choose you–All the classes are given by program.
Booking rate depends on the evaluation of kids/parents & supervisors.

    Payment_30% higher than average
The payment consist of basic pay + bonus
Even the lowest basic pay is $18/hr, and the lowest bonus(only require you show up on time) is $2/hr, then it’s $20/hr. That’s the lowest pay, my friends, it’s decent!
In addition, they provide another bonus, if “open” 40hrs per month(10hr per week), you will get another $2 bonus, then it’s $24/hr.
After month, good teachers easy to get raised, and get $26/hr.

    Experience with them
I have worked for different online English companies and have to say Magic Ears is one of the best. Not only do they have a wonderful staff but lines of communication are always open.
They never want to have anything misunderstood and will always contact you and make sure everything is clear and understandable. Also there is much thought and preparation that goes into each and every class. Magic Ears is always adapting and evolving to meet the needs of the students.

Potential_It’s not a part-time job, but also career.
E-learning is surging in China. MagicEars’ growing amazingly fast.
As far as I know, there’re some teachers already turned to interviwer, trainer, media administrator.
I want no just teaching, I will choose MagicEars.

That’s my review for MagicEars. Anyone interest in being a teacher of them could e-mail me and use my referral code T113697

  • Jon

Jessica above commented October 1st about not enough classes.
I had no classes booked then either.
October 1st through October 8th is a Chinese holiday hence there were no classes.

VIPKID started me at $19/hour and Magic Ears started me at $22/hour.
Even if VIPKID and Magic Ears paid the same (but they don’t–Magic Ears pays more),
I’d STILL choose Magic Ears just because it’s more fun and the teaching platform is way better in a about ten different ways.

I have no problems booking students whenever I open slots.
The students/parents don’t choose you–you are shuffled around in a carousel and assigned to a student.
That’s why there aren’t some teachers taking up all the bookings. They are evenly distributed according to availability.

Come November Magic Ears expects to expand its hours and its crop of students.
As a company of this sort it is extremely new and has not yet advertised heavily to students. It is in beta as of now.
But now is the time to get in if you can.

  • Jessica Tedone

I don’t get enough classes. It looks full the week before and then they keep dropping off so I need to look elsewhere since it’s not consistent money.

  • Julie

Not sure what’s going on with this company. A lot of fluff but not much substance. What’s advertised and what I was offered were miles apart. If the pay scale is what draws you to them, keep moving. You won’t be getting $26 per hour and they don’t have enough classes to keep you busy enough to earn.

  • Tommy

I’m an American with 6 years classroom experience and 2 years experience teaching Chinese kids online and they still started me on $18 an hour. I couldn’t be much more qualified, so I’m not sure who’s making $26 an hour. Also, average booking rate is a lot lower than 50%.

    • Tim Gascoigne

Thats correct. You started at $9 base pay. Thats $18. Then you get $1 for showing up on time and another $1 per class if you open 60 slots. So….that is actually $22/hr which is their advertised range. Then you get raises. I get $24/hr. Many would be getting $26.

      • Teacher

And now it’s much lower. The higher pay is for actual teachers’ certification/Masters degree in education. Also, don’t believe the 50% for juniors, 80% for seniors because that is no longer true and they pretend they never offered it. They also just ran a promo giving preference to any teacher from any company who could show a 100% satisfaction rating guaranteeing them 100% bookings so the people who have been there got screwed over for shifts in April, and it doesn’t seem to be bouncing back. They have a great sick leave policy, but unless you are one of their favorites, they will play games with you on ranking up. And even senior teachers got screwed over in preference for new teachers from companies with different performance standards last month with that promo.

        • Melanie Huddleston

SO true. I consistently was booked had a high rating, which meant I actually should have received TWO promotions. Instead, one parent said I didnt’ have enough energy… ONE complaint! They fired me without warning or explanation. They just said, the parent said I had low energy and they would discuss it with me if I disagreed. The classes have four students, and all my other students that day gave me 5 out of 5 stars! I tried to remind them of how high my overall performance score was, to which they kept saying was low. When I posted this in the facebook group I discovered it was a very high overall rating. Teachers with much lower ratings had received no backlash for it. No one, not even my special mentor would speak to me. They just fired me. I enjoyed the sick leave policy but do NOT use them as your only company. It is a BIG mistake.

Yes same thing here. Played games with me. I got to teach 100 classes then got a parent complaint and that was the end of it. Definitely cant trust them. Their tech support is rude and the coaches are even worse. Had Coach Nice. Fired me for arriving at the Goodbye slide 1 minute early. Just a joke and no respect for their teachers. I won’t be surprised if they are out of business soon. They think there is an endless pool of ESL teachers in America

I am reading your post now- October of 2020. Can you suggest other companies? I have thought about ME but, I am not too sure about them based on things I have read. You can email me if you would like. I am a native looking for a company that has students…. sounds simple but, I just want to work. Surely it cannot be that hard.
