Koolearn
Koolearn Review
Koolearn (also called New Oriental Online in Chinese) is looking for British or North American teachers to teach Asian children and adults. They would like teachers with a bachelors degree or higher who have experience teaching TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS and SAT tests. The website says they pay 6000 per month to undergraduate teachers and 8000 per month to teachers with masters degrees. I think they are talking about Yuan so about $950-1250 USD per month (they don’t say how many hours of work is involved.) Any information on these guys? They were closing down a while ago and now it seems they are not and still going strong. The email provided for this company doesn’t work. Does anyone have any other contact info for them?

I worked for them for 2 years. They hire non-natives. An overall good experience but very unstable booking rates; very busy in summer but it drops in autumn and stays about the same till maybe April or May. It’s actually very unpredictable. In the end my hours were almost non-existent and they terminated my contract for that exact reason – something I had no control over. They explained it by my poor performance which seemed to be good enough to get a fully booked schedule in peak months for more than 2 years, but I am inclined to think that they hired too many teachers and don’t have enough students now. That instability and the reason for firing me were my issues with them but I did earn good money with them and hardly ever had any problems.
The students are mostly adults, some schoolkids too but fewer. All lessons are 30 minutes long, follow the same pattern: vocabulary, dialogue, questions. They do not really give any instructions so I had to come up with my own way of teaching the material. Some creativity might be needed there. Classes can be booked and cancelled 12 hours before the actual class time. Classes cancelled within that 12 hour period are paid the same as taught classes. The communication was good, payment was always on time. Just don’t expect too many hours
Hope this helps
