  • This company still uses Skype in 2024? And they pay 10 yen ($0.064) per reply? No there's no extra zero. You saw it right: 10 yen is $0.064 !! This must be a joke.

  • Can anyone tell me anything about the interview and trial Speaking lesson for this school? Please help. Thanks.

  • What a load of BS. My grammar skillls are impeccable, yet thet failed me in the corrections section of the testing. This school pays very low wages, yet they forbid their teachers having a second job. Anyone who has been in this game for a while knows that online English teachers should avoid putting all of their eggs in one basket.

For an entry level person, this might be ok, but anyone with experience under their belt would do well to look elswhere. These guys want slaves, not English teachers.

We ended the interview after five minutes.

    Avoid.

    • Amen. Their 2nd grammar test where you categorize the error is hot garbage. They the difference between the correct choice and incorrect choice is almost always 2 different parts of speech and the options don't include auxiliary verbs or articles even though they were some of the mistkes given in the test. I guess that's a good indication that they aren't worth the time. Not to mention their top pay is apparently $6 and hour.

  • The pay is ridiculously low. Can anyone recommend me a higher paying school for a non native speaker who has certificates and 2 years of experience?

  • Definitely a waste of time. When applying you have to do two sets of tests. In total, it took me almost two hours to complete the entire application process. I passed and scheduled an interview. I didn't pass the interview, but they didn't state why. I have two years of teaching experience. Not to mention, most of my students were Japanese. I think the interview wasn't OK, the woman conducting my interview could not even understand me. You can choose who to hire. However, you should respect that someone has put in a lot of effort to apply. And therefore, they should get a fair chance.

  • I have been working for this company for almost 2 years now. I had no previous experience so I was okay with settling for this kind of payment, and if someone also needs a start and can't find anything better, Best Teacher really isn't that bad. The benefit is that you can earn money doing corrections and replies compared to other companies where you can't. I do agree that the management has low English skills. I get frustrated when I see the mistakes the other teachers make sometimes. But I can't complain too much.

    • Is there any other school where I can do corrections like in Best Teacher? They fired me from the Correction room because they are cutting down on the tutors. :)

  • I have worked as an ESL teacher for nearly 10 years and this is the worst online school I can think of. I have spent more than 2 hours to take their tests and I could not even submit them. The salary is less than 6 USD an hour. No matter how desperate you are to get a job do NOT apply.

  • STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY! The pay is extremely low and the management will side with the student over the teacher 100% of the time. I am a native English speaker and two days ago, I had a horrible experience with this company. I corrected a student’s expression and put the phrase into a more natural way of speaking. According to Best Teacher, my correction was not in line with the grammatical rules in English. However, this correction was made to encourage the student to speak like a native and it wasn’t even out of line with English grammar. The Best Teacher HR sent me a rude email in poorly written English (I know, ironic) and removed my access to the correction room (lowering my already low chances of make money). I chose to resign from the school. They’re shady. You’re better than this. Do not waste your time.

  • Interesting comments, as I have both a degree and TESOL certification...and 9+ years teaching experience, yet they rejected my application.

  • For a start, BT rely too heavily on low-paid non-native speakers of English who are supposed to be writing conversation scripts and fixing errors on the part of the student. However, they make a shed-load of errors themselves. A Native English Speaker finally conducts the Skype lesson and is expected to explain other teachers' errors ( or ‘ignore them’ which is what management tell us to do ). This all eats away at the lesson time. Therefore, I have had many unhappy students. They know they were promised corrections etc by NES and got sub-standard work done by non-NES instead. As for the 'salary', it must be the lowest out there. The 'management' team don't want to listen to common sense and instead seem to favour Eastern Europeans and Filipinos: believing they are equally competent at teaching English. The only good thing to come out of the experience was that BT is a good place to hook some private students - the ones who know what they want ( a real English teacher ) and don't mind paying upwards of 3,000 yen per hour.
