The information needs to be updated as Alo7 are no longer recruiting and are just completing existing booked classes before they have to cease teaching with foreign teachers who are not resident in China.

Alo7 apparently does not hire Americans living abroad. I recently applied and initially didn’t get a response, so I emailed them to enquire. They said they don’t hire teachers from South Africa. So I responded clarifying that I’m actually not “from South Africa,” I’m an American citizen (vaild ID, eleigible to work in U.S. etc) who is living in South Africa, to which I got the same exact response. Would it possible for you to make a list of companies that will (or will not) hire Americans/Canadians living abroad?

They don’t hire PEOPLE LIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA due to the unreliable Load-Shedding electricity problems.
It has absolutely nothing to with your nationality.

Got an email today. They said they have too many teachers because of downtime at partner schools because of coronavirus.

Thanks for posting. I was about to apply, but I also don’t like what I hear about not being able to make as much as you would like.

I have to disagree with Elijah. There is no philosophy of punishment. If you request time off more than 15 days in advance, there is no penalty whatsoever. If you have an emergency and request off, you only have to provide proof of the emergency to have any cancellation fee removed. I find their policies to be fair and their staff to be understanding. They have an excellent support staff and a warm Facebook group where everyone celebrates milestones reached and helps field new tutor questions. Their pay rate may not be the highest in the online ESL industry, but they make up for it with the stability they offer tutors as most classes are booked in 20 and 40-week sessions. There are also multiple incentives that increase the pay.

I will leave a more thorough review after I no longer work for the company. The management is in la la land as to the role of teachers and what the meaning fo independent contractor is. Needless to say, it is quite literally impossible to make over $19/hour. The base pay is $15 per 50 minutes with 5% bonus for all teachers for attendance, 10% bonus for teachers if you teach 50 classes per month, 13.3% bonus for attendance if you teach over 50 classes per month and have taught over 500 classes in a rolling 12 month period, and 18% if you teach over 50 classes in a month and over 1,000 total classes. There is also a quality bonus which is speculative at best as to how you really get it as the criteria for what the rate you on is very speculative. They have a philosophy of punishment and you end up getting triple penalties if you take time off as you lose a percentage of your bonus, you receive a 5 to 10 dollar fine and the schools will usually take classes away. Overall not the best company and probably not the worst but things seem to be going downhill fast.

Company is OK but has an unrealistic expectation of their tutors in regards to tech. Not fully capable to handle group classes if zoom is down. No secondary platform is available and the courseware has many additional parts that slow down computer and connection speed. There isn’t a low tech option either.

Outside of the technical issues though, this is a good company to work for granted if you have a gaming computer or computer that has a larger memory, have a secondary high speed internet account.

Most people don’t and your performance could very well suffer. Booking rate is tied to your performance.

    So-so about this company.

Caring CEO and home office staff but partner schools and parents are not well orientated to their business model and tutors.

All things mentioned are not no-gos and company can improve

As of this day, the company is improving as they have created their own platform for their content. Although they have created their own platform, there is still some unrealistic expectation the company has in regards to tech. This has a lot to do with partner schools and what they want rather than ALO7 orientating them to their business model and the partner schools then deciding if it’s right for them. Very caring CEO and team, easy to get bonus, pay is standard at $15 USD. I say work here.
